　　North country scene:

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.
  V" S# ~+ f, R5 d
　　Both sides of the Great Wall
+ r) u- _6 k0 E8 }
　　One single white immensity.

' \: u: A7 ^# B! T8 b　　The Yellow River"s swift current
0 ?3 s% b; {. J% D7 c% C6 |
7 d" }9 K. w5 h3 K1 \　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

0 x6 b, Y# U, _- n0 Q　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

2 `# I# s8 t9 T5 D! [　　Grows more enchanting.

　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

4 T5 c- _3 I' @; D　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

　　Were lacking in literary grace,

　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu

　　Had little poetry in their souls;

* Y( k  b( c. L& E　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　All are past and gone!

　　Look to this age alone.
