　　North country scene:

, [3 M2 ~2 b: r4 p, v　　A hundred leagues locked in ice,

　　A thousand leagues of whirling snow.

　　Both sides of the Great Wall
+ t' |/ J& C& g; w4 l% o6 E3 A
　　One single white immensity.
* l+ O1 j* {& f( p. ?6 f
　　The Yellow River"s swift current
: @1 \" o* J" I! l; p
7 K. N. k0 p3 D- ~　　Is stilled from end to end.

　　The mountains dance like silver snakes

& }1 O: V' S# l; [% Y　　And the highlands* charge like wax-hued elephants,

/ u# `. G3 e& i" ^/ o　　Vying with heaven in stature.

　　On a fine day, the land,

2 c4 Q8 M2 |0 O9 ^9 t# Q" Q; |　　Clad in white, adorned in red,

　　Grows more enchanting.

　　This land so rich in beauty

4 M) t5 e. Y1 @! h) B6 e$ B　　Has made countless heroes bow in homage.

0 Q; d3 _) x9 q　　But alas! Chin Shih-huang and Han Wu-ti

' H/ y/ ?* [1 T　　Were lacking in literary grace,
4 i% J1 p8 X- T) S0 W9 v+ M6 Z
　　And Tang Tai-tsung and Sung Tai-tsu
/ [5 ^/ Z/ J. b# O1 |$ I% s4 }
　　Had little poetry in their souls;
9 t4 e7 d2 w3 O9 J' b$ H　　And Genghis Khan,
& K! O8 ?8 A, X3 {
! O1 `- R1 V( M! v　　Proud Son of Heaven for a day,

　　Knew only shooting eagles, bow outstretched

　　All are past and gone!

　　For truly great men

　　Look to this age alone.
