9 i# d+ w' M8 U5 B9 QAs a result, immigration and controversial laws around citizenship are coming up a bit more often on the doors, say candidates.
! M- }8 v2 f; g2 ?& KConservative candidate Tim Uppal said his party has an excellent record on welcoming newcomers.+ O/ b1 [" x. i' Q6 V2 y
9 o: H k0 w' N6 |( O“Under this government, we have had the highest levels of sustained immigration in Canadian history,” he said.

Uppal also defends bill C-24, legislation that allows the government to strip citizenship from dual citizens convicted of terrorism or treason. He said when someone has been convicted and served their time of a charge as serious as terrorism it’s common sense to deport them.
5 b% u- q0 N+ l; T* v! ]5 P“If we can have their citizenship stripped, because they’re a dual citizen, than I would rather not have them in this country,” he said.

Liberal candidate Amarjeet Sohi said the Conservative bill is discriminatory, treating Canadians with dual citizenship as unequal.9 x- F+ e3 D9 \
“It will not make us safe,” he said. “Every Canadian should be treated the same, you can’t have different punishments for the same crime.”

# D* d9 ?' N2 b6 U& i# t“People are really, really under fear and they want to see these changes,” he said.
