 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason

8 o/ B& T3 K1 ~$ ] The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
# j7 y d4 d. d& u1 b4 |to their first ministry, to reopen a church 7 |& i x2 b6 q3 f" e
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
% D/ ^% ]4 H6 }0 c0 [/ E9 f& `5 J2 nexcited about their opportunities. When they saw
$ l; Z: C; y! @7 ?3 s/ Rtheir church, it was very run down and needed
! Z3 d* Q7 B* C! c5 ?! [much work. They set a goal to have everything
; E) z; H8 O& `6 Q: x3 f9 ldone in time to have their first service 5 v( |* ?2 r/ ~
on Christmas Eve. + c- ]% p# z+ ]% Q$ Y! n
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,5 u& H4 N( I6 q1 N- x' Z3 ?
painting, etc, and on December 18
3 E% j2 `& k9 y! G, bwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
* l- z5 V0 j; T) Z# DO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving @5 ?' E' T% J' T" Y, E0 _
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
1 B. c. T1 K+ {1 m5 O' H O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.9 K7 O' B* C/ L
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had
6 z; J% y( A% G$ t0 Xleaked, causing a large area of plaster about 7 {$ X6 f# ^0 `# m4 _- Z6 q- s
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall 1 F6 J6 i) q* H, j i
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit, 0 t; N5 I" @) C+ \
beginning about head high.
6 {; ?6 }* e% f$ V1 a) pT he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
# d5 r* X. T& T0 w1 e* jand not knowing what else to do but postpone 0 k( ^+ T2 B/ l( X$ Z2 }1 S+ D
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
' I, K! g* M3 H# {( v0 tOn the way he noticed that a local business was ( h2 G% E- Z! T# V
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he ( w3 @" c" w9 \( R" S/ F1 i
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
' k5 X: `" r/ I% m/ S x( jhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
! X* D6 ]2 x" @: C9 R1 t* Bwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross 0 v, d) y; B( ]6 D9 [: z( v
embroidered right in the center. It was just
8 W# w. k4 {( C( p$ L, P ) k! j' J. l3 @! o1 \* v# ?
) v* b: k, x1 w. G9 X4 H- G ( g+ t) H9 P- Y' \
& i+ t2 o9 r3 n+ I( ~2 V$ k
o- z) D/ b" c1 k2 ^3 K( o
V; {0 h) n' ^7 g! ~: _the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. $ J5 l6 }! E, ^8 U' I
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
% m* Y9 t+ P( `" A$ ]; {3 W! j. Ewoman running from the opposite direction was
l8 L* ]# T, M+ L2 utrying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
" f) i' N- \$ c5 }5 \' E6 hinvited her to wait in the warm church for 5 l1 `% m& |" ]) R* x5 M6 _
the next bus 45 minutes later.
$ H, j) a1 j6 s% |/ Q7 t, k) {
She sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
& g* w2 q. ^: T" Rwhile he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put ; D* C, n# m! j, }. ]$ S" R; U$ U& i6 f
up the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
, _1 c0 A* O2 ]6 Acould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
+ g; L9 s9 S$ C4 F. x) UT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center. S4 T- ~5 K4 Z: e
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"* X" E) X! e5 h- ]( x/ h% Z
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
9 D4 Z; ?( u0 |The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check% B) x9 R1 }% u' o: z% ?8 b
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
( ~4 h; O. i0 A( B+ g3 N1 fit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
, `" r B5 w" y( `& Rmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
6 ]3 @, d( A) d2 O2 g* c2 qT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor ' O- e$ |' z7 v5 H2 N
told how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The : ]: n' ^8 l/ z0 K' m
woman explained that before the war she and " l- `/ ?) j9 |. {
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . + t Y; m8 {2 ]6 p: y: K
* x4 \; \; Y, }& T
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
( C# U ?# B7 Z6 ^# ]5 P2 BHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
: V. U/ x1 z( _) N- kHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her 1 l! k _5 r. O! @% w2 G
husband or her home again.
. }) j5 i( X, I$ P; \T he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;
% B: u: w$ b g9 v1 k1 ~but she made the pastor keep it for the church.$ n. d- E7 N: R* ~
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That, X: V. Q& `+ s ]2 y
was the least he could do. She lived on the other
8 d/ F# r% X6 V- Dside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn * C- N3 b) l& T' z( |1 B: h z
for the day for a housecleaning job.+ }& a, r" E+ t7 A
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas 7 Y: v; n. S; x! A8 i
Eve. The church was almost full. The music and the
4 |& y1 A% `8 p1 {6 K2 q1 f2 ?( Kspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
7 d) l+ q- p! s, B% x& L0 H+ gpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 4 D8 @* `8 t n, E* ?0 L1 I
and many said that they would return..
1 G) R0 I4 A" Q3 c6 V* G, Q" UOne older man, whom the pastor recognized % W" K: z H1 |0 E
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
3 [5 E" V% c/ v- k5 wpews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he ! S9 r! w- I2 ]
wasn't leaving. # |! S! O+ C6 h1 r. G
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on
1 A3 u2 A [, ~0 ythe front wall because it was identical to one
, D$ v. m- A+ Z/ \that his wife had made years ago when / D' e( A$ S; `9 B y
they lived in Austria before the war and how ) E2 m; Y- u/ s. }& I5 N
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? 7 q( h; F9 \" S) J; h6 i
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
) ` t& c) [6 Tforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was " {/ m9 a( X/ ?4 S4 d5 J
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
% N! K l7 c# e7 g# _/ Kput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home. {! l* ]6 q$ ^3 r) D, w p6 w
again all the 35 years between.
' O7 q" P5 n( Q3 ?3 o0 {, i& UT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ' e. q1 Q5 D* u5 o6 i
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten 3 m8 m5 \& Y4 O# S8 O; u
Island and to the same house where the pastor # L. J/ y( ?2 m! T0 `7 F% }) B
had taken the woman three days earlier. & k5 K+ P- O% I
He helped the man climb the three flights of" ?) @2 {3 U @4 w, _! T
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
2 G6 `1 E# p. k8 Hthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas 6 M2 s, Z0 R$ B/ G# n
reunion he could ever imagine.

cares we know He will see us through.

$ C2 c- i+ I1 Fdifficult at best, just remember I'm here 4 b% ]* ]& L( P, q2 y- e' i& u2 S
