 Beautiful story.... makes you understand that things happen for a reason1 a, T2 x; ~4 R# t- M4 K

2 l: n- W2 e- N# Z! D The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned 0 F- `- g2 B2 l! @3 \ ^' v& Q
to their first ministry, to reopen a church 5 S& v4 Q; O: ~
in suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October # N7 e" ^$ K$ A& S- x, }
excited about their opportunities. When they saw
" ^) k6 x1 T' O: H9 p) F2 Stheir church, it was very run down and needed & N% i! ?" o. R' H8 f$ ]; V
much work. They set a goal to have everything
+ D& Y8 d" S1 W3 b4 A- H6 idone in time to have their first service
( P4 i8 j- A( T6 z4 K! n: mon Christmas Eve.
; n! D7 \9 Z6 Z: ?: G3 oT hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
7 O5 ?- W x# V3 Xpainting, etc, and on December 18 2 z8 D* ?6 D h9 ]8 b
were ahead of schedule and just about finished.
2 ]2 d+ H: q+ z9 {O n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving
! n6 L! |2 }6 j5 P- K0 crainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days. $ Z6 i1 @. I4 W2 A4 i8 ]1 p+ }# B
O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.1 R) o4 M% c. R {/ j+ N/ R2 ?
His heart sank when he saw that the roof had3 A/ D: h- i- \: u
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about / O4 ^! |: X- k' S
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall
* }7 @% `# X: G; A8 f0 Eof the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
& S. m6 J- f/ i+ }& Ubeginning about head high. ( d2 n4 d9 K; z
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
$ q3 }8 [& u% v% O$ xand not knowing what else to do but postpone & T. E1 z, |" i3 D
the Christmas Eve service, headed home. 1 z( Y Q; T/ T( B" x
On the way he noticed that a local business was 6 I* j2 G' X# x* ^- I' Q. k
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he + w: F6 ~4 d ~% B! c8 c) U
stopped in. One of the items was a beautiful, 0 I1 F$ {# Q. w. @* u5 q
handmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
) C) \! M8 \) e) J' ]with exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
& X6 E% e+ \( m, ]( lembroidered right in the center. It was just ; ]- y( m- U; b, i: r
+ Q0 z1 u; h7 d3 K$ t% R" }
, b9 P! f# J/ W# E- I% G
, o; s* h/ z" u9 N9 f+ z* ]/ v: y/ H) q' i0 @* @ i
8 k4 |* V8 t: ~$ y6 ?8 e& a+ t8 A) N
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church.
7 t. w6 @' o( V/ B7 v) AB y this time it had started to snow. An older + \! l& B$ _4 s* \7 N( a- y; L. s
woman running from the opposite direction was ( C" ~ p' Y: H$ `) N% Y
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor $ l2 r v2 u4 ]; @ r$ Z
invited her to wait in the warm church for 4 i/ ]3 X7 i5 e6 J. [/ `. H4 S
the next bus 45 minutes later.
% M7 e: ?4 O! _% A! D
# S& n5 I& q* F. _# LShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor ) M* h2 z9 c Q& ^
while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
% l. Q8 v' a2 M6 O6 d/ Yup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
5 E- O6 A; N$ T2 o" u, ~6 acould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area.
$ w4 f: C1 m- e/ \' ^; oT hen he noticed the woman walking down the center7 P% U" |8 R+ X/ f
aisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"1 y9 Q2 w" }/ k* e! @' F
she asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?"
. t$ u, `7 t y9 ?8 X. p8 N) ~0 uThe pastor explained. The woman asked him to check
- j* j) V* J7 N9 I. u: K- y/ T6 Qthe lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into# \4 c- O% l" k9 m$ S2 N
it there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had
! B8 m- v# `; _: zmade this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria . # S5 W5 f$ m! }( u9 ~2 H
T he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
( K% K+ o, ?: m' H4 Ntold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The
# t$ X0 Z; x/ A# r, e; Ywoman explained that before the war she and ( ^9 \$ w$ x2 ~) {7 q
her husband were well-to-do people in Austria .
0 ` W- I, F8 @% Y( [% L3 @9 e2 k6 Z4 n' C+ I
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
: {( q+ l5 w! d( q3 S+ F. ]! c1 C6 _4 XHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
v/ `$ z- d7 i! v' Y$ W0 `He was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
9 X; |4 c. Z8 ^% i& Whusband or her home again.
0 v6 s! O9 k5 ?; p4 OT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;; X8 g r& P* l: _8 X% H
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.8 h/ E; _$ y% a# U9 [
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
6 o' x0 A9 g; Z3 x0 T. X5 Gwas the least he could do. She lived on the other
6 z# a% [) ?9 uside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
( l0 r4 g" [( ^for the day for a housecleaning job.
3 T$ q1 |4 U6 Y$ g ]& _. \W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
' K+ y: o3 @ s* y1 V4 T- z* DEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
( L( j% ^; V2 ?" p2 Aspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
4 H9 ^" L. X: H7 ^, O3 qpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door 9 r4 s3 A! v W7 _0 M \
and many said that they would return..
% P: @( h6 R! L8 B5 sOne older man, whom the pastor recognized 3 r" r& t y2 U* U, G4 j( O
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the , N/ r5 w6 g2 A5 C3 @) ~3 P
pews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he 2 P; d6 {& ~7 |: T
wasn't leaving. ( L& o. R7 x' n! \/ @
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on 0 p% k6 v( k0 C
the front wall because it was identical to one
$ e# Y6 u/ [) jthat his wife had made years ago when
L* o4 c! Q- p9 y& E+ B. O0 p. L, Athey lived in Austria before the war and how 5 t" D9 P9 [' T3 o
could there be two tablecloths so much alike? ) j7 T- h, |% j+ B/ f) ^
H e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he
; I2 U3 f% [& _8 Aforced his wife to flee for her safety and he was . M% b/ R6 \5 x3 C
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
. F* s! f, j( Nput in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home% d" w) v" o- ?' g1 w( K9 d
again all the 35 years between.
+ o/ J# l1 m& b: c1 oT he pastor asked him if he would allow him to 2 q; k+ w( ~( L: G8 `+ o
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten
3 S1 c; m# \$ k: O- i# wIsland and to the same house where the pastor ( I$ m1 W- {7 s7 `/ e! ^2 G
had taken the woman three days earlier. 1 {& y5 ]. t2 A& z- c' c
He helped the man climb the three flights of) p: x3 J9 w" Y! s0 U9 f
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on6 E4 L, t: B; [
the door and he saw the greatest Christmas % j4 Y* W) T0 `
reunion he could ever imagine.

along your way. His love is always with you. His

cares we know He will see us through.

; S/ e' t3 @ H$ t# d+ zdifficult at best, just remember I'm here
