The brand new pastor and his wife, newly assigned
: Q! r" {. c8 `2 z! A9 {6 k1 ]+ ^to their first ministry, to reopen a church
# c* M# F V8 N" cin suburban Brooklyn , arrived in early October
: `" g9 _2 O1 Texcited about their opportunities. When they saw ) H) g: f, T% ?4 a. h) M
their church, it was very run down and needed
; f8 s! l3 h/ _! dmuch work. They set a goal to have everything
: g8 @* j; |9 K! `done in time to have their first service ' A7 |' ]9 O5 ~, P5 W% v# ?& I
on Christmas Eve. 9 k5 c; z" k2 k, }9 G1 c/ D; y
T hey worked hard, repairing pews, plastering walls,
3 h( N( s% D3 w; b0 i4 Epainting, etc, and on December 18
% I0 Q+ N& G H2 A- V5 G( bwere ahead of schedule and just about finished.
, t& r8 s" V( f2 q9 r5 _4 iO n December 19 a terrible tempest - a driving - J2 G. g# R0 J7 D1 h w8 a
rainstorm hit the area and lasted for two days.
! W1 }. ]9 q1 S" [- k O n the 21st, the pastor went over to the church.
% D4 X# L& r# W2 A8 k5 i& D5 }' NHis heart sank when he saw that the roof had7 U4 B3 Z6 _2 H' f
leaked, causing a large area of plaster about 8 X ]6 J) k8 `9 w" u
20 feet by 8 feet to fall off the front wall / V( G4 T( O. r! q
of the sanctuary just behind the pulpit,
5 ?2 V1 F! U/ R9 P) q N1 ebeginning about head high. 4 E8 {5 y- k; W/ d; L
T he pastor cleaned up the mess on the floor,
' Y6 @) `6 N8 P6 o& J8 nand not knowing what else to do but postpone % l& q& H; B j# L$ T$ Y
the Christmas Eve service, headed home.
" N1 n5 S9 J: E& {2 m' i0 qOn the way he noticed that a local business was & X# V' n: {& n2 e+ O
having a flea market type sale for charity, so he
5 d$ } v. D! j1 l# tstopped in. One of the items was a beautiful,
7 V% h5 z* ~/ `: w: E3 Hhandmade, ivory colored, crocheted tablecloth
& C! U, x. m! vwith exquisite work, fine colors and a Cross
! S9 O: i6 Y/ b9 Oembroidered right in the center. It was just * C' q" F: ^2 a- x! c1 F1 h& N! T
J8 M' O5 @) S8 {7 D
" _8 c) o4 M* Q; t4 G
$ G) Y/ _; L. h ~5 W% a8 Y7 u$ S* v+ [# `# H
5 R% }7 W, U& l! b' H Q7 n! u5 f+ b9 u9 I1 ~2 ^ U" X9 C
the right size to cover the hole in the front all. He bought it and headed back to the church. T7 b) t& h |1 Y! e
B y this time it had started to snow. An older
; ~9 i8 @; k/ `9 Swoman running from the opposite direction was 1 l8 L$ ^/ T3 U" u' l
trying to catch the bus. She missed it. The pastor
; D# Y R; L( K" C5 y. S4 f9 r2 Uinvited her to wait in the warm church for , a5 m, C3 Z# d& P
the next bus 45 minutes later.

- K0 V1 g& G' m( A- C2 j" mShe sat in a pew and paid no attention to the pastor
: t' N" d- j0 o2 H* `while he got a ladder, hangers, etc., to put
e2 H6 b4 O. c, {/ Eup the tablecloth as a wall tapestry. The pastor
( _; t' ?2 }# N) q% _0 P- ncould hardly believe how beautiful it looked and it covered up the entire problem area. * b% j4 D8 }# v- e7 r' y% ~
T hen he noticed the woman walking down the center
8 e+ G; I2 S" J0 w4 C3 p: R" taisle. Her face was like a sheet. "Pastor,"
O0 ]8 p& {$ dshe asked, "where did you get that tablecloth?" # U$ y" K4 @7 z" f Y+ O; ]
The pastor explained. The woman asked him to check+ D; r% J4 T( O2 k; I
the lower right corner to see if the initials, EBG were crocheted into
# }5 U& [2 [/ [ b- g, Nit there. They were. These were the initials of the woman, and she had ) d* f* _" o: j; N; g# X; M; T' c
made this tablecloth 35 years before, in Austria .
4 c% g0 L; _0 K0 ^* {) OT he woman could hardly believe it as the pastor
. [' J. @5 Z9 a9 v/ Ntold how he had just gotten "The Tablecloth". The - C3 h o r- w/ w* W! y( G
woman explained that before the war she and
0 k' X9 R& x' f- R( ^# |her husband were well-to-do people in Austria . # b5 T$ j/ _ D
1 x- {3 H9 O; t
When the Nazis came, she was forced to leave.
5 [: O2 v) n( v0 N# J0 QHer husband was going to follow her the next week.
8 g. m' y y# f5 VHe was captured, sent to prison and never saw her
2 S" M+ [2 [0 Z, I. N" Ahusband or her home again.
2 V( k, L' d2 U% E: m2 GT he pastor wanted to give her the tablecloth;+ H+ O3 ~9 r5 G. M
but she made the pastor keep it for the church.0 _. {9 o, A/ O4 w6 i
The pastor insisted on driving her home. That
; h6 ~, F4 s. r7 M; awas the least he could do. She lived on the other
7 w8 J; J' }3 S8 u3 |/ S! rside of Staten Island and was only in Brooklyn
5 r; B L2 a, k7 afor the day for a housecleaning job.$ Z+ g0 F: ~, w
W hat a wonderful service they had on Christmas
' z" z* R+ e8 H2 H7 bEve. The church was almost full. The music and the
5 Q4 }, Q: j4 t3 W; zspirit were great. At the end of the service, the
( I8 A* E' g4 G/ Z, t8 Mpastor and his wife greeted everyone at the door
+ ?6 M, l6 y0 s. N+ ?7 B+ {and many said that they would return.. & g; Z- u8 Q; h& Z+ x
One older man, whom the pastor recognized # f. W: O8 a1 k* N5 O/ m- s+ a
from the neighborhood continued to sit in one of the
, _4 o$ q" q7 upews and stare, and the pastor wondered why he
/ E# N' \! Y% d7 Hwasn't leaving. + e6 d2 z4 F( p5 o( [
The man asked him where he got the tablecloth on : q9 N/ x9 z8 ^- ^, y" H
the front wall because it was identical to one # N1 I1 g" _" p* F
that his wife had made years ago when d6 q- V+ q. G
they lived in Austria before the war and how ' ~6 `* \$ c8 G, s4 r
could there be two tablecloths so much alike?
3 v) |) N7 ^9 C* _; b& p0 h* K4 R" oH e told the pastor how the Nazis came, how he 0 }+ @+ I) ]" N* l
forced his wife to flee for her safety and he was , L' p: v# W, @0 X+ O) H
supposed to follow her, but he was arrested and
1 C; R; _, O4 N' z& @put in a prison. He never saw his wife or his home; e% j0 j5 T1 t; B9 Z
again all the 35 years between. ) I' [) C' d/ m5 p! P8 ]& V0 M
T he pastor asked him if he would allow him to ) E2 ^2 c8 F* g
take him for a little ride. They drove to Staten F% m b* V+ T! x
Island and to the same house where the pastor 8 w5 D# G2 q0 Z
had taken the woman three days earlier.
) d$ A1 Q" h, f* V' D6 n' qHe helped the man climb the three flights of- J( Y v' v7 p: o- D
stairs to the woman's apartment, knocked on
9 e8 m b% ^0 d- K( N+ uthe door and he saw the greatest Christmas
- p) H( e+ D5 @0 W5 zreunion he could ever imagine.' `7 S+ }! S4 `3 i8 t
