Edmonton's population grows by 30,0008 K5 @. h6 T4 j6 S

EDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.
9 G" y' f3 C' }- E8 J& p, D0 g"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
s- V2 l& O) E& Y4 ~The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.

"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said.
, K# E. N0 _+ j, t% [; r6 hEdmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
2 d$ z0 G- p5 b4 A, I; p& c4 G) U4 ] LThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
