Edmonton's population grows by 30,000

# \ b n! l' mEDMONTON - More than 30,000 people moved to Edmonton between 2008 and 2009, bringing Edmonton's total population to 782,439, say municipal census numbers released Wednesday morning.. C* `. y! P: E, i# U. v
"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.
& T9 v* j3 d! cThe population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.. E+ T! n+ @7 U' }5 D* N
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase.
! R3 F0 d8 b n1 T( x; z6 l1 x"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. . ~. l2 A. T2 }
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.+ C% T7 `0 u' B1 _" A
This year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
