"It shows the resilience of our city," said Mayor Stephen Mandel.' a0 s' l, E+ L
The population increase will lead to roughly another $650,000 for the city in provincial grants for policing and libraries, while other grants such as the provincial Municipal Sustainability Initiative could also be affected.6 ~4 ]$ `8 a& w. n1 o" \
Mandel said he was surprised by the increase., d' B. ]7 g, G! ]7 }
"It's a substantial increase, but it's not going to overload our system, so it won't work," said Mandel, noting that much of the population is between the ages of 25-34. That age group does not use as many city services as others, Mandel said. & @$ ]3 D0 z1 d' |* o8 |
Edmonton grew by about 40,000 people between 2005 and 2008. The city in 2008 decided to conduct an annual census, after conducting the surveys on an ad-hoc basis before that.
' b6 u' h9 h& }1 rThis year's census cost $1.7 million to complete. City Manager Al Mauer said the annual census could be reviewed but, over time, conducting population surveys brings more money and important data to the city. |
