Master Composter/Recycler Program / Free!

/ P0 [* H1 @7 V" U/ y% lDear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the
" I; h( c5 I; yMaster Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule; {1 o; y+ |9 l* O/ c
(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about
3 P; p A$ f; ^- z# w- Q" Genvironmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste) X7 S% ~3 U+ l: R1 o. e; z- o
management; home composting; household hazardous waste;) z) W, C( o- u1 R; k" }" C/ I
vermin-composting and residential recycling.' T: [% H r t7 U7 u4 c7 A, I
) r6 ?. N ~: D0 a: zThis course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
, u& b2 g* w) fto various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates _( p2 n4 B' u
complete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:9 N6 p9 C# `1 i2 c$ h# c
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important1 h3 x" a4 {: ` {
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
. k( s9 z- T- X* ?" K& ?importance of composting and recycling.2 ?# G/ T( i7 Z
4 @+ t: `4 \# h7 }9 V7 F3 J9 NExamples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
' w- C9 _. O: |7 E5 f# AReuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;0 a5 @) e( b) w2 }" O
public education display booths; assisting with programs and% C" x4 `( B9 ^" i1 }9 O; ^
maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at
) H" V3 s# t) ]" o- Jvarious demonstration gardens and general public and school; z5 w: ], g3 x: {! t) c/ d, w* p! b
presentations.

There are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and
! m7 m% I: A. z D. G) K7 Bvolunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the
- C6 _, I! A2 S# W% q1 Zmost. Curious about recycling and composting and sharing your
/ l2 s5 H5 y) F6 J4 Sknowledge with others, then apply to become a Master

Course Dates: April 14 - May 2nd, 2009 -Tuesday and Thursday evenings
