Master Composter/Recycler Program / Free!

9 J' @5 b+ A# j2 Z) FDear colleague: once a year, the Waste Management Branch hosts the5 L$ L" i1 [; b# c$ v& b
Master Composter-Recycler Program. Over a 3 weeks course schedule
N; S1 r1 J2 v# i/ N. k(Tues./Thursday evenings and Saturday) volunteers will learn about5 u# |/ |# Z! M# d: V4 Q7 Z
environmental stewardship in our city, such as: history of waste/ _# u9 \4 p' J) d# ~! U4 F
management; home composting; household hazardous waste;, \' Q# [0 b6 \+ o% j7 u
vermin-composting and residential recycling.1 F& x+ x; ]6 i$ a$ i/ G
+ W, J* P4 u: r; c
This course offers in-class instruction as well as several field trips
4 R9 e. S4 L2 z: U6 v( M6 m+ Mto various City facilities. After finishing the course, graduates, o4 m F" P+ G; V
complete 35 hours of volunteer activity promoting the four R's:& n7 b! E! z1 R- p; X1 t
reduce, reuse, recycle and recover. Graduates become important. O/ H, H! e) @% n" c: V
resources in their communities as they broaden awareness about the
4 F3 M8 n6 w j, }0 Y2 V% u# kimportance of composting and recycling.. O9 `1 z3 y2 [& s4 n
" K: h! T2 c0 g S
Examples of volunteer activities include: help with Reuse Fairs & the
4 J# L: ]7 a4 I, C8 K- AReuse Centre; helping friends/neighbours with composting problems;
# U3 n1 }! h. w( g1 V p: v. dpublic education display booths; assisting with programs and
9 S7 u x! N- \! p g. s6 }maintenance at the City Compost Education Centres; assisting at! Y. A+ d! K( u$ Z2 C2 A. P
various demonstration gardens and general public and school

/ w, D# _* n/ @3 n; g' v/ J+ v* qThere are many other opportunities for volunteers to contribute and& D2 b4 A7 D9 ^) M$ K$ m2 z* h
volunteers are able to choose the opportunities that interest them the) ]* o$ L8 U- B% |( P6 L S) u
