The title “construction electrician” defines a person who, because of his or her knowledge,
1 q! s9 W/ e, A+ _8 Ftraining and abilities, is capable of laying out, installing, testing, troubleshooting, and repairing electrical
; O/ h/ H; Z' `7 ysystems, which provides light, heat, communications, and power to a variety of new and existing
9 N* H- E W- j4 q1 k* Z8 Jresidential, commercial, and industrial structures.5 B# o5 Q1 F* N3 ^! m* f
Construction electricians read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings. M5 t* Y0 J( \9 J; u
and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layout. They cut, thread, bend, assemble, and$ ^% N. D7 B' u) R q
install conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings. They pull wire and cable4 L3 A& J1 u6 X- Y2 Y) G0 d
through conduits, position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches,
6 V/ I5 R' h, y& ^/ f* zrelays, circuit breaker panels, and fuse enclosures, install single and multi-wire cables above and* X0 u, u. ]0 r U" f4 U
underground, install data cabling, and install and maintain fibre optic and signalling systems.

! R# Y" n# U* F$ P2 f+ C( rall weathers; inside in dusty industrial plants and mills; to state-of-the-art clean-rooms in hospitals and, o: w% ^; k6 A/ Y
manufacturing plants. The work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting,
* }" x0 v! Q9 k) c( mclimbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped, confined spaces or on ladders and

Construction electricians are required to have good mechanical ability, a thorough+ r- x% }0 @; b1 @* Q" |' U) t# F
knowledge of the principles of electricity, circuitry, and power distribution systems, and familiarity with' A0 D( M$ d, {/ B r; S
the materials and techniques of construction. All construction electricians are required to be competent in
$ X, I* ` B$ p( gthe use of hand and power tools and test equipment.$ _$ V8 S1 r9 B
All electrical wiring and installations must conform to the CSA Canadian Electrical Code.. z. D5 N! ^/ ?% b& T& W. J8 j
Therefore construction electricians must be thoroughly familiar with the latest issue of this document.

Construction electricians interact and work co-operatively with the full spectrum of2 Q: h* Z [! J' w5 q- h8 S v
construction tradespeople, such as carpenters, lathers, cabinetmakers, plumbers, and heating, ventilation/ H% Z/ Q% X' a2 U
and air-conditioning technicians. They are required to constantly adjust their schedule and work to

With advances in technology the work of the construction electrician is changing. Today’s
& J: O2 F7 y- }6 `wired environment requires construction electricians to be able to install a variety of wiring such as data,
) o' Z& m2 R0 jaudio, video, signalling, and communication cabling. Electrical control systems are also becoming more
* }: f; R4 J k# r( I* F jcomplex, often solid-state or computer-controlled, which requires the construction electrician to have a2 i, V9 @1 L; \! D7 C x
