SCOPE OF THE CONSTRUCTION ELECTRICIAN OCCUPATION

systems, which provides light, heat, communications, and power to a variety of new and existing
+ x6 U( T) f4 U5 b1 \4 z4 yresidential, commercial, and industrial structures.
4 v$ E* M' t- w# }" Y+ P- OConstruction electricians read and interpret electrical, mechanical, and architectural drawings
0 N" Q& W. i5 K$ q- a+ @and electrical code specifications to determine wiring layout. They cut, thread, bend, assemble, and
0 f+ r; z% z: @, a) Oinstall conduits and other types of electrical conductor enclosures and fittings. They pull wire and cable& Z' ~) }2 P- ^9 f
through conduits, position, maintain and install distribution and control equipment such as switches,) L( p8 r$ `8 `( [
relays, circuit breaker panels, and fuse enclosures, install single and multi-wire cables above and5 x; B8 U8 I3 i0 S- ]' b& o, U: B
underground, install data cabling, and install and maintain fibre optic and signalling systems.6 t' R5 w7 l: P1 _+ i6 U
Construction electricians work in the full range of environmental conditions: from outside in
) o3 m& h! S) |" i" v5 Lall weathers; inside in dusty industrial plants and mills; to state-of-the-art clean-rooms in hospitals and
( w, N& U" y+ a- t" p' h: {- xmanufacturing plants. The work often requires considerable standing, bending, crawling, lifting,
$ ?+ L7 M5 W7 K" z; Cclimbing, pulling, and reaching and may be conducted in cramped, confined spaces or on ladders and
$ a; c4 f' g U* S1 W7 `scaffolding at great heights. Hazards include electric shocks, burns, and falling objects.
! r" q7 x3 G0 |; b0 ^8 @" e6 Z1 X* EConstruction electricians are required to have good mechanical ability, a thorough) B2 g, B$ r B/ [
knowledge of the principles of electricity, circuitry, and power distribution systems, and familiarity with1 @8 S) J% S) j0 y3 b- M$ d
the materials and techniques of construction. All construction electricians are required to be competent in" @9 `0 `% @# j. g7 e
the use of hand and power tools and test equipment.$ e0 e5 ^1 i" e5 n+ ~4 e* Q4 q
All electrical wiring and installations must conform to the CSA Canadian Electrical Code.

wired environment requires construction electricians to be able to install a variety of wiring such as data,
