9 z8 m3 Q" Q* M& BGood news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. . g$ Y' a6 [% ^( @

Yesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
" K' {' T; K }Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
3 B& g b( @% Rnews to report from that meeting.2 X% M* S2 K4 j" q; ~8 d# {* V
) `; _, u4 Z. AFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
8 S2 q/ d+ J9 B" i% w5 Kundergraduate international students from the increase to the : D! g% }& `8 N
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
t0 m- D, Z& l8 {6 G/ E" d# J, C3 }students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
" H% L" [% W/ {tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). * j8 O. ~. c4 S) U$ ]! M8 f( t6 \
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase 9 q( i" }5 j" z# l k/ c* H
the differential for international graduate students.

. B. h! }/ Q& s" |4 F% ]1 xNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
. V9 ?3 u" q0 d' b% h& pincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
8 h1 ?0 h! q' h2 m220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
3 }( p. [- F6 Q- O& o2 e2 k1 | zwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
9 A/ `5 ^0 c' B9 d gleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
4 Q4 M( P7 N! ?- z1 Utuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
" c+ @/ X2 O l2 {increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
2 J. l( o6 j0 [& E, S# c- S3 [international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I , v5 t# o* K, ]
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
3 r6 G1 ` b" B/ J) |have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this ! k# \0 C4 s- u4 `
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your - v2 L. s0 R* f+ `( s# Y
