Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree. ' d- F7 M! I3 \7 f2 u: G

/ ~: Z! f; C i0 S: H8 X: u; uYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties 3 N, T7 f% w& Z) E) P
Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad 0 D9 U% v& @% z$ g+ W$ G( i/ Z
news to report from that meeting.& N, v$ U1 s: T _$ }+ m
! K2 \* _, s% x: d8 j+ |First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current ) ~ |4 P! p7 f2 w4 P* \) M4 y$ g
undergraduate international students from the increase to the
$ B1 G; [: t' b* Zdifferential fee. This means that next year, all current international
; ~% C2 N8 c- H, c4 |. Fstudents will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base ' ?) A' [* L$ q- |
tuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%). / B4 U4 O& {" G
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
6 U) z( {& g! U5 ^3 ^the differential for international graduate students.
. K/ a( w" w: L/ C% J1 S# C: {# e; t" Q" M
Now, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
: L2 G8 l5 L" a5 w" R0 ~: d2 v/ C0 L" Mincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
7 l# C$ y4 J- x# W/ | G# o2 Q' X220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
U2 B9 a- E' @+ V: B# s' h5 o1 Swill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At & p- I& a& O5 B- Z/ L Q) w) _
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in 4 @( f& @2 _. O2 u/ e* E+ Y2 t
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
5 o8 t2 G6 I' p1 b0 e7 Lincreases once they are here.' r$ }( q" E3 I# l

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
, l7 p, }+ X* c* P; K& B4 v7 j" A+ minternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I , b5 W! ]5 E( R; w |
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
) f$ y( Z: X1 c. _2 c8 Hhave sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this 3 R$ T9 y# L2 c" i
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
