Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

Dear International Undergraduate Students,
) c9 E6 R3 x' I6 ^
: r4 ~+ ~) T5 U3 M# k4 L$ N4 EYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
/ d) Q0 X% E3 `% @Council met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

First, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
4 @! Y4 t) p1 [: x, ^/ ?undergraduate international students from the increase to the
+ y& A% [0 ]3 U$ s9 U, L8 Y  L' w7 `differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
* {; M0 D$ s# D5 ttuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
Also, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
( U; b% b6 A: r6 A( G/ H9 f8 v# R9 n3 Gthe differential for international graduate students.
# b& D$ k- e* \3 R
+ Z- c% A! h( P1 B# E$ NNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
7 F( {* P, m; {9 ~1 A* d+ ?$ Mincrease in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
; m- _1 V# I" P. L% p/ e, S# Nwill pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
least, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
7 u! y) Y" b# f0 P( Mtuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

The Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
1 U/ ~$ Y/ s) k8 T* r, Cinternational differential as well as the base tuition increase. I
would like to say thank you to all of the international students that
have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
" ^2 b( m  [4 K! eincrease. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
help. Thank you.
