Good news. U of A plan to stop increase tuition for students who are recently in U of A. However, they will increase tuition the current students who will go to U of A next year. Sounds fair. I deeply agree.

  p6 G/ X4 r" tYesterday, the Academic Planning Committee of the General Faculties
4 X4 k. m6 I' {7 u. s  p, KCouncil met to discuss the tuition proposals. I have both good and bad
news to report from that meeting.

( Q  L3 D* r/ Y/ L! l+ `& AFirst, the good news. The committee decided to grandfather all current
- w( }" E) E1 I8 pundergraduate international students from the increase to the
differential fee. This means that next year, all current international
" L! \% {$ z* t3 k* E5 ]students will pay the same tuition as this year, plus whatever base
9 q: E' y/ _( Stuition increase that all students face (the proposal calls for 5.75%).
/ t$ M8 O9 d  p0 H# g- g8 y1 I0 NAlso, the administration decided to withdraw their motion to increase
9 ~* k6 |" Y. @; N9 {3 w: b' T( bthe differential for international graduate students.

' d: F' S6 r" HNow, the bad news. The motion that the committee approved called for an
increase in the international undergraduate differential from 157% to
4 a5 M( _" F# a! d3 l  f% B220%. This will mean that all new international undergraduate students
will pay $15,353.89 (assuming that the 5.75% increase happens). At
$ R/ r6 C: r% a2 h# _' W/ tleast, all new students will know what the U of A is charging in
tuition before they come and they will not face any large unexpected
increases once they are here.

1 T! A& w) q, G% WThe Students' Union will continue to oppose both the increase in the
international differential as well as the base tuition increase. I

have sent me emails, come out to consultations, and opposed this
increase. I couldn't have got the increase grandfathered without your
